I start back at work at the end of January, and I am slowly preparing for my time back in the classroom. At the end of last year, I had a big clean out and I reluctantly parted with some old favourite games. Unfortunately, these games had seen their day, and they certainly did not owe me anything! So I am now busy preparing new resources for my classroom, and yours.
Instruments of the Orchestra Bingo is a fun game that all of your students will want to play again and again.
There are 30 different Game cards in the set, caller cards and game tokens.
I have my personal class set printed onto different colored papers and they are then laminated. My last set stood the test of 10 years time in my class room—and it was time to upgrade, so now we have this nice new set!
I store my cards in a plastic sleeve with the game tokens. I then keep them altogether in a ring binder. This way they are stored ready to go when we have a little time to kill at the end of a lesson.
I play this game mainly with my Year 7 students, but my older ones will request to play a few games every now and then too.
I find that playing this game while we are studying the Instruments of the Orchestra helps my students reinforce their learning. I have a couple of resources that are perfect for this– Instruments of the Orchestra Unit of Work, the Instruments of the Orchestra Instrument Study and if you are really keen there is the Instruments of the Orchestra Bulletin Board Kit too!
As a bonus, if you print the caller cards into different sets (I have different color sets laminated) you can then use these for cooperative learning games. My favourite ones to do this way are in small groups sort into the given Families OR even into the Aerophones, Chordophones, etc… Another favourite is to get your students moving and do Mix, Freeze, Group. For this, each student has a card, and as the music plays, they swap cards. When the music stops they freeze, then you call group. They then have to group according to your instructions– Families, Aerophones/Chordophones/ etc, tuned/untuned, high pitch/low pitch/no pitch. The types of groups you can form are only limited by your imagination. For this game, I love to play “Walk this Way” – students of all ages loooove that song!
